Haere mai e te whānau,
We are delighted to invite everyone to Grandparents, Whānau and Friends Day on Friday, 28 November, a much-loved celebration of the relationships that weave our community together. This year, we are introducing a refreshed format to ensure the day is even more inclusive and accessible for all families. In previous years, our PTA community event ran separately in the evening, but this year we are combining the school celebration with our community event to ensure every whānau, regardless of work commitments, have the opportunity to enjoy the occasion, connect with our kura, and share in the learning and creativity of our ākonga. It is a small shift in timings that we hoped would bring even greater togetherness.
The day will begin with grandparents, whānau, and friends arriving and heading straight to classrooms to spend meaningful time with our tamariki. Feed & Read will follow, creating warm moments of storytelling and shared connection. Morning tea with the children will bring even more joy, and our Marimba group will perform in the music room, offering a lively musical experience for guests. Later in the morning, guests can gather in the hall for tea and coffee while enjoying beautiful performances from our Choir and Ukulele groups. The formal performance showcase will begin shortly after, celebrating the talent, culture, confidence, and pride of our learners. At midday, we will share a short address recognising the significance of our intergenerational relationships and the vital part our community plays in growing confident, kind, and motivated learners.
As the day closes, we are thrilled to invite our community to the Mairangi Bay School Christmas Market, proudly hosted by our PTA. This is a time for everyone to come together, celebrate our wonderful community, and share in the joy of the festive season. Following our much-loved Grandparents Day, whānau and families are encouraged to stay for a relaxed evening picnic on the school field. In the past, many families have brought picnic baskets, blankets, umbrellas, and festive spirit gathering under the summer sky to enjoy a cheerful evening of connection and celebration.
The market will feature performances by our talented MBS Choir alongside a special guest dance troupe. Food stalls will offer delicious treats, including a sausage sizzle, dumplings, popcorn, and a bake sale. The Uniform Shop is also open, and there will be a number of exciting stalls for families to explore throughout the evening. Held on Friday, 28 November from 5.00pm on the Mairangi Bay School field, the market is a beautiful way to wrap up the week – celebrating friendship, community spirit, and the joy of giving. Whether families come for the kai, the music, or simply the chance to connect, it is a joy to see everyone together, sharing in the spirit of the season.
Thank you for your ongoing support. We appreciate you...always.

Striving for personal bests and celebrating each other’s success
Kia ora e te whānau,
A warm congratulations to all students who currently hold Mairangi Bay School’s athletics records. Your achievements in track and field showcase dedication, perseverance, and a willingness to aim high - qualities that strengthen our whole school community.
These records reflect the spirit of striving for personal bests and celebrating each other’s success. The MBS team are proud of the example you set for our ākonga, reminding us all what can be achieved with focus, effort, and belief in yourself.
Congratulations everyone.

Mairangi Bay School Pride
Kia ora e te whānau,
Our Years 4–6 athletes represented Mairangi Bay School with pride at the Cluster Athletics Day on Tuesday, 25 November at the Takapuna Athletics Club. It was a brilliant day of competition, teamwork, and determination, with our tamariki showing confidence, courage, and respect in every event.
We were especially proud of the way our ākonga supported one another - celebrating each success, encouraging their peers, and embracing every moment with a positive mindset. Their effort and attitude reflected our school values and the spirit of our community.
A warm thank you to our staff for their organisation and guidance, and to our whānau whose encouragement helped make the day so special.
We are still awaiting the final results and will share a full report with you next week.
Ngā mihi for your ongoing support.

New Korean Language and Culture Initiatives for 2026
Kia ora e te Whānau,
It was my honour to visit the Korean Education Centre (KEC) in Auckland on Friday, 21 November. KEC represents the Ministry of Education of Korea and the Consulate of Korea in Auckland to promote Korean language and cultural programmes. Together with other community leaders, we learned how to make traditional Korean kimchi and shared ideas on how we can be better global citizens, celebrate cultural diversity, and learn together to create a better tomorrow.
I was also fortunate to discuss future initiatives with Director Sunghoon Cheong and Coordinator Esther Choi. Korea is one of New Zealand's most important trading partners in the Pacific region, and our school has been strongly supported by our Korean community for many years. To further encourage curiosity and interest in Korean language and culture within our school community, Mairangi Bay School will strengthen its partnership with KEC and introduce Korean pilot language and cultural programmes during lunch times in 2026. The Korean pilot beginner language programme at lunchtime will be open to all interested students, parents, teachers and supporting staff. At Mairangi Bay School, everyone is a lifetime learner, let us learn Korean together with students, teachers, and parents, it will be a fun and rewarding journey.
We will also introduce the Taekwondo lunchtime club which is supported by KEC, hopefully we can start it from Term 2 2026.
Our Mandarin programme supported by the Confucius Institute (Ministry of Education of China) will also continue in 2026. Furthermore, we will work with the Japan Cultural Centre at the Consulate of Japan in Auckland to introduce more Japanese cultural activities for our students.
All initiatives aim to provide rich and enjoyable language and cultural programmes for our students in line with our strategic goal of Foster Productive Relationships Within Our School and the Wider Mairangi Bay Community, thus being locally grounded and globally minded. We hope our students will have more opportunities to learn different languages and cultures, respect each other, learn from each other, and grow with more potential opportunities together in the future.
Details for the Korean beginner language class, and the Taekwondo lunchtime club will be available at the beginning of Term 1 2026.
Ngā mihi for all your ongoing support as we learn together to create a better tomorrow.

Our School Expectations
Kia ora e te whānau,
A part of modelling and upholding our school values of kindness, respect, and resilience, this week we spoke with our ākonga about the importance of wearing the correct Mairangi Bay School uniform. Keeping expectations clear and consistent helps every child feel confident, prepared, and proud to belong to our kura.
Why this matters
A consistent uniform supports a calm, settled learning environment.
It promotes equity - everyone feels included and part of the same team.
It builds personal pride, self-management, and responsibility.
It reflects the high expectations we hold for ourselves as a school community.
Key reminders
Students must be in the correct MBS uniform as outlined on our website.
We understand that at this time of year, some students may have white soles or small coloured details on their shoes. We will be flexible until the end of term. From next year, footwear is expected to be completely black.
Birkenstock sandals are permitted until the end of the year, however, students must change into suitable footwear for activities such as PE.
PLEASE NOTE: Footwear from 2026 must be suitable and appropriate for all school activities and therefore, the wearing Birkenstocks, Crocs, Jandals and Slides etc will not be permitted.
No visible under-layers (such as thermals).
All uniform items should be clearly named.
School hat only, please. Please CLICK HERE to access our sun safe message.
Thank you for your support in helping our students demonstrate our school values every day.

The Year 4 Mairangi Bay Mavericks put in a strong team performance to defeat the St Johns Pacers 32 to 20.
The Mavericks' defence was outstanding throughout the match, with players helping each other and working together to create turnovers. Their pressure defence led to numerous steals, which the team converted into quick transition layups. Every player gave 100% effort, showing great teamwork and determination from start to finish.
Jonathan was named Player of the Day for his excellent all-round effort on both ends of the court.

A special mention to Ivy too, for her incredible shooting from so far out! Congratulations to the whole team for an incredible season! And thank you to your families who are always so supportive on the sidelines.
Mairangi Bay Gummy Bears
The girls have had an awesome spring netball season, and it’s been great to watch them in action each week! After going unbeaten and winning their grade in the winter competition, the team moved up two grades for spring and continued to get stronger. They had fun, played a variety of positions, and kept their winning streak going, only losing one game. The girls have all grown so much as players, are really starting to shine in certain positions, and their strong team bond has been clear on court. We’re super proud of them and everything they’ve achieved this year.

New Zealand Traveller Declaration
Anita Nicholls
Going overseas for the school holidays?
Everyone travelling into New Zealand must complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration, including returning New Zealand passport holders.
If you’re travelling as a family or group and completing multiple declarations, the NZTD app allows you to copy your travel details into another declaration, making it easier to complete multiple declarations for the same journey. The submitted declarations are then all easy to see within the app.
The New Zealand Traveller Declaration collects travel, customs, immigration and biosecurity information and aims to improve the safety and security of New Zealand. It replaces the paper card you used to fill out on the plane.
To make your arrival easier, do your digital declaration before your flight back to New Zealand.
How can you help develop your child's learning at home?

The Parent Portal is a collection of guidance and resources for parents, families and carers. This year-by-year learning guide covers the New Zealand Curriculum and currently covers Years 1 to 8. We'll be adding more soon. The guide is structured by year level. Choose your child's level and find ways to understand what they do at school, and how you can support them to achieve what they need to this year.

Adult Conversations
Kia ora e te whānau,
To support our whānau to develop and implement restorative practices, this section provides gentle guidance and advice.
This week - Adult conversations: Respectful, Honest, Calm, Listening. Good with older students to set the expectations for a discussion. For primary students who are clearly not adults, perhaps call it a ‘Cool’ conversation where we keep things cool.
If you require support with parenting, please contact your whānau leader.

Devices Down Without the Meltdown
Kia ora e te whānau,
Many parents find themselves dreading the moment when it’s time to take away their child’s iPad, with the resulting meltdowns, tears, and outbursts becoming a common household occurrence. But why do children suffer from these ‘tech tantrums’, and what can parents do to stop them?
Remember:
Abruptly ending your child's screen time can trigger meltdowns due to the highly stimulating nature of digital content.
To minimise resistance you should set clear expectations, provide warnings, offer engaging alternatives, and stay consistent.
Thank you for your ongoing support as we continue to create a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment for everyone.

A Ray White Christmas Wonderland
Nathan Janes - Tumuaki Principal
Sharing Joy Across Our Community
As we move towards the festive season, our friends at Ray White Milford are once again opening the doors to their magical Christmas Winter Wonderland, running from 20 November to 1 December. This beautiful community initiative brings together celebration, generosity, and connection - values that sit at the heart of who we are at Mairangi Bay School.
Families are invited to step inside an enchanting winter world, complete with a private five-minute Santa visit, themed walk-through experience, festive family photo opportunities, and a printed keepsake to take home. Every moment has been designed to spark joy for tamariki and whānau.
Bookings cost $5.50 per family, and all proceeds go directly to supporting local children and families through Woven Earth - a charity providing essential support to those rebuilding their lives. This reflects the spirit of kindness, respect and community care we uphold at MBS.
A Chance to Give Back
As part of the experience, visitors are encouraged to bring a NEW small, unwrapped gift to place under the tree. These donations will go straight to children in need this Christmas. Suggested items include:
brand new toys
colouring books
sunscreen and hats
beach towels
scooters and helmets
headphones
sports equipment such as basketballs and footballs
Every gesture adds a touch of magic to a child’s Christmas morning.
This event not only spreads festive cheer but also strengthens the connections that make our community special. It’s a chance for us all to live out the values we teach - showing compassion, uplifting others, and creating memories together.
If you’d like to be part of this wonderful community initiative, bookings are essential and can be made using the QR code on the poster.
Let’s celebrate the season with generosity, warmth, and a little ray of giving.

We are a modern dental clinic with 3D intra oral scanners, 3D printers and we have a CBCT (3D Xray) on site as well utilizing up to date technology to provide high quality dental care.
The main relevance to you and your students is the availability of an on-site General Anaesthesia (GA) theatre.
We are based at DBS Dental Studio, 55 Corinthian Drive, Albany and we have dedicated free parking on site.
A lot of kids are anxious to receive dental treatment, especially if those needs are quite extensive. The GA theatre allows hospital level of care by putting the children to sleep whilst their dental work is completed. In Auckland, there is a massive shortage of resources within the public system resulting in long waiting times. There are only 2 other clinics in Auckland that offer this type of treatment, but they also have a fairly long waiting time
We are proud to say that we have the most available dates and flexibility with scheduling - helpful for those emergency scenarios. Also, we are one of the very few dentists in the wider Auckland region who offer wisdom teeth removal via the Ministry of Health.
The theatre has advanced monitoring equipment and is well staffed with an experienced specialist anaesthetist and recovery team. They have a specialised interest in paediatric patients but are able to also cater for special needs and adult patients as well.
As per our clinic’s philosophy, we will guarantee a friendly, professional service with a high clinical standard.
