Celebrating Our Inquiry Programme with the Paris 2024 Olympics
We are thrilled to share our recent inquiry program connected to the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics. This program is a fantastic opportunity for our students to learn about the Olympic Games, the values they promote, and how these values align with our school values of Kindness, Respect, and Resilience.
Special Visit from Olympic Weightlifter Richie Patterson
On Tuesday, 30 July, we welcomed Richie Patterson, an Olympic Weightlifter, to Mairangi Bay School. Richie’s visit was an inspiring experience for our Kura as he shared his journey and the significance of the Olympic values in sports and everyday life. Richie Patterson is the first weightlifter to represent New Zealand in four Commonwealth Games and three Olympic Games, achieving a gold medal at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. He also won the National Weightlifting Championships and placed second at the Oceania Weightlifting Championships. During his visit, Richie emphasised the Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship, and Respect. His stories of perseverance, dedication, and sportsmanship resonated with our students and staff alike.
Richie Patterson, along with his wife Pip, dedicates his time to training and managing a weightlifting and CrossFit facility in Auckland. They are also proud parents to their son, Cooper. Richie’s commitment to his sport and his family demonstrates the balance of passion and responsibility, providing a powerful role model for our students.
Our inquiry program will continue to explore the Paris 2024 Olympics, delving into various aspects such as the history of the Games, the different sports, and the stories of athletes from around the world. We are also organising a mini Olympics during Week 5, providing opportunities for our students to participate in a team, similar to their Olympic role models. We believe that this program will enhance our students’ knowledge and inspire them to embody the values of Excellence, Friendship, and Respect - connected to our school values of Kindness, Respect, and Resilience in their everyday lives.
We extend our thanks to Richie Patterson for taking the time to visit our school and for sharing his insights and experiences. We also thank our Kaiako and Kaimahi for their efforts in making this inquiry program a success.
Let’s continue to support and encourage our students as they embark on this exciting journey of learning and growth.

Out of Zone Enrolments Each year the board will determine the number of places which are likely to be available in the following year for the enrolment of students who live outside the home zone. The board will publish this information by notice in a daily or community newspaper circulating in the area served by the school. The notice will indicate how applications are to be made and will specify a date by which all applications must be received. Applications for enrolment will be processed in the following order of priority: First Priority This priority category is not applicable at this school because the school does not run a Special programme approved by the Secretary. Fourth Priority will be given to any applicant who is a child of a former student of the school. Auckland Police Notice Are you planning on dropping off, or picking your kids up from school? When children arrive at or leave school each day, how you park and drive can protect them or put them in danger. Plan ahead - sometimes a meeting point further down the road might be a safer option to avoid congestion around the area. Often drop off and pick up zones can be crowded before and after school, so allow plenty of time for school drop offs so you are not rushed and give the road your full attention. When choosing to park near a school make sure to park safely and legally. Where and how you park matters – tamariki can’t be seen if we park illegally. If you choose to stop or park illegally you may be fined.
