Mairangi Bay Village NewsChannel MagazineTots to Teens MagazineMairangi Bay Surf Club needs your help!
We need 2 minutes of your time to complete a submission to Auckland Council to help secure funding for MBSLSC’s future building redevelopment.
The Mairangi Bay SLSC building is well past its useful life and can no longer cater for its members and activities. A redevelopment project has been on the go for several years but it has been delayed many times by factors outside the Club’s control. At this stage, we foresee an opportunity to commence a rebuild in approximately 3 years. However, this requires significant funding, of which a large portion is expected to be provided by Auckland Council.
As you may be aware, Auckland Council has released its long-term plan (LTP) for consultation. The LTP is also known as the 10-year Budget. It sets out what Council plans to achieve in Auckland over the next 10 years, and how it will fund it.
Funding for Surf Life Saving facilities, in particular club rebuilds, is not specifically earmarked for funding within the LTP. MBSLSC and Surf Life Saving Northern Region (SLSNR) believe it is imperative that Auckland Council allocates dedicated funding within the LTP that is specifically earmarked for the rebuilds and ongoing maintenance of surf lifesaving club facilities. This funding is essential to ensure the continued operation of clubs and the safety of all who visit our beaches.
Public consultation for the Long-term Plan 2024-2034 is currently open and closes on
Thursday 28 March. This is where you can give your feedback to ensure Auckland Council reviews its commitment to surf lifesaving and the associated capital requirements. We urge all Mairangi Bay SLSC members to submit their feedback on the LTP to advocate for the inclusion of this funding. Without it, a new surf club is unlikely.
We would also welcome you asking friends and family to complete a response as well.
The below instructions are a guide for how to submit your response:
1. Go to
https://akhaveyoursay.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/hub-page/long-term-plan-2024-2034 2. Click the link in the blue button that says “
Have your say now”.
3. If your response is solely about the lack of surf club redevelopment funding in the Auckland Council LTP then please answer the following questions only (note, not all questions are mandatory). If you wish to provide a wider response to other aspects of the LTP then please refer to number 4 below.
a.
Answer question 1b as follows:
1b. What would you like Auckland Council to do more or less of?(Note that while we can do less of some activities, we will still fund actions required of us by law)
Please tick “Do More” for the following two options:Parks and Community: A wide range of arts, sports, recreation, library and community services including a fair level of funding for local boards.
Council support: Supporting the delivery of services, enabling effective governance, emergency management and grants to regional amenities.
b.
Answer question 1c, using the following bullet points:
· Surf lifesaving clubs play a vital role in our community, providing essential services to keep our beaches safe. However, many of these facilities are reaching end-of-life and are in need of replacement. Without adequate funding, our clubs will struggle to continue their lifesaving work effectively.
· Without fit-for-purpose facilities that people enjoy visiting, the Auckland region risks losing the volunteers who provide the service, spelling the end of more than a hundred years of vigilance on our beaches.
· We therefore request that Auckland Council allocates $8.02 million in funding within the Long-Term Plan specifically earmarked for the rebuilds and ongoing maintenance of surf lifesaving club facilities, as per Surf Lifesaving Northern Region’s Surf 10:20 Capital Development proposal.
· Mairangi Bay Surf Lifesaving Club has existed in its current location for 70 years. The current membership comprises ~150 active lifeguards, over 500 Junior Surf children aged 6-14yrs, and a further ~600 associate members. The building is well past its useful life and can no longer adequately cater for its membership and activities. A new building is therefore imperative to continue being able to serve the membership and community.
c.
Answer Question 6b, using the following bullet points:· With regard to Question 1c, Auckland Council has a central proposal that recommends spending more where it is needed most. Surf Life Saving facilities are a critical component of our community. They have served as temporary welfare and community centres, as well as civil defence centres during regional emergencies, including during the Auckland Anniversary flooding and Cyclone Gabrielle. Mairangi Bay Surf Lifesaving Club volunteers rescued over 70 people in the Auckland Anniversary floods and did so operating out of storage shipping containers.
· Our facilities aren’t a 'nice to have', they are the heart of our service. Allocated funding is essential to ensure the continued operation of our clubs and the safety of beachgoers. The amount requested is minimal when compared to the benefit it will have for the region.
d.
Answer Question 7a (OPTIONAL) · With regard to funding priorities Mairangi Bay SLSC’s local board area. Choose Hibiscus and Local Bays Local Board.
· With regard to Question 7b, answer as you wish and include the following in tell us why:
“Finalising the review of the 2015 Mairangi Bay Reserve Management plan and supporting the Mairangi Bay Surf Lifesaving Club to progress its redevelopment project is imperative for the upcoming year.”
· With regard to Question 7c:
“It should be a priority to deliver the Mairangi Bay Reserve Management Plan outcomes within the 10-year period, including a new surf lifesaving club building and associated storage, road closure and seawall maintenance.”
e. Complete Your Details. Feel free to confirm you are submitting the response on behalf of Mairangi Bay Surf Lifesaving Club.
4. In addition to answering the questions on surf club redevelopment funding per above, if you wish to respond on other aspects of the LTP, please do so but ensure when you complete Your Details, select
No to “Is your feedback on behalf of an organisation or business?”.

For the hearing-style event, we would like to invite individuals or groups who don’t regularly meet with the local board. Speaking slots will be limited and requests will be prioritised in that way.
As part of this consultation, the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board is also seeking feedback on its priorities for the next year and the longer term. We encourage you to provide feedback to help us shape the future of our area and the greater Auckland area.
Please feel free to forward this information to your networks and/or through your social media channels. We look forward to talking to members of our communities at these events.
