Make it Count - MoE Maths Action PlanOn Sunday, 4 August, the Minister of Education Hon Stanford, announced the "Make it Count - MoE Maths Action Plan," aimed at raising student achievement in mathematics to be implemented nationally from 2025.
Why the Change?Mathematics is a fundamental subject that forms the basis of critical thinking and problem-solving skills essential for our children’s future. Recent assessments have shown that there is room for improvement in student performance across the country. The Ministry of Education (MoE) has recognised the need to address this gap to ensure all students have the opportunity to excel in mathematics. Therefore, the "Make it Count - MoE Maths Action Plan" has been developed to:
Improve Teaching Practices: Provide teachers with enhanced professional development opportunities focused on innovative and effective maths teaching strategies.
Enhance Student Engagement: Introduce engaging and relevant mathematical activities and resources that connect learning to real-world applications.
Foster Equity: Ensure that all students, regardless of their background or learning needs, have access to quality maths education.
I am pleased to acknowledge our recent mid-year student achievement 2024 data report highlights student progress in mathematics as a strength at Mairangi Bay School. This is due to our dedicated and hardworking teachers and staff. Despite this celebration, as we learn more about this new MoE initiative, we will keep you informed.
Thank you for your patience as we navigate this change together. If you have any questions, please contact me at nathanj@mairangibay.school.nz
Movie Night Fundraiser Success!A huge thank you to our PTA and all the whānau helpers who made the Years 5-6 Movie Night on Friday, 2 August, an outstanding success! Your hard work and support ensured the event was enjoyable for everyone involved. Thanks to your efforts, we have raised significant funds that will go towards upgrading our playgrounds. These improvements will provide our tamariki with a more engaging and safe play environment, fostering their physical development and well-being.
Kaitiaki Garden UpdateWe are also thrilled to share the progress on our Kaitiaki Garden. On Sunday, 4 August, our whānau, alongside Logan from Zone Landscapes and Ben from Eco-neighbourhoods, came together to install various native plants. This collaborative effort has helped to create a beautiful and educational space that will be instrumental in teaching our students about sustainability, life and living processes, and kaitiakitanga – the guardianship of our environment.
The Kaitiaki Garden includes a range of native flora, carefully chosen to support local biodiversity and provide a hands-on learning experience for our students. This garden will serve as a living classroom, where children can observe and study plant growth, understand the importance of native species, and learn about ecosystems. Additionally, it will inspire them to be mindful caretakers of the environment, instilling values that will benefit our environment through our school values of kindness, respect and resilience.
Acknowledging Our ContributorsWe would like to extend a special thank you to Logan from Zone Landscapes for his expertise and guidance throughout the planting process. His knowledge of native plants and sustainable landscaping practices has been invaluable. Likewise, Ben from Eco-neighbourhoods has provided critical support and resources to make this project possible. Finally, I would like to thank Paul - our site manager - for his vision, skill, passion, and expertise. Their contributions have not only enhanced the beauty of our school grounds but have also enriched our students' educational experiences.
To everyone who contributed their time, effort, and resources to these projects – ngā mihi nui ki a koutou. Your support and involvement are invaluable and appreciated. It is through collective efforts like these that we continue to create a nurturing and enriching environment for our children.
Thank you for your support and commitment to our school. We look forward to our next Community Working Bee on Sunday, 22 September where we will lay mulch and install more native plants. If you are keen to help, please feel free to contact me at nathanj@mairangibay.school.nz
