Principal’s Message

Kia ora koutou!

I hope you had a fantastic holiday and are now energised, relaxed and ready to continue our learning journey together from Term 2. This Easter has been wonderful, full of stories with friends and whānau, reconnecting and creating memorable times to treasure, share and laugh after a term under a restricted setting.

With a new term comes a new beginning. Life seldom gives us a chance to join a community and be part of such a special place. I am privileged to be joining Mairangi Bay School as your new principal and ready to connect with our tamariki, kaiako and whānau.

My story
In 2004, as young teachers, my wife and I moved from the UK to New Zealand, seeking an adventure. Eighteen years later, with two beautiful children and a dog named Toffee, we have found our paradise on the North Shore. We feel very grateful to call Aotearoa our home, especially the picturesque beaches and scenic views from Mairangi Bay Beach. We enjoy spending time together, playing or watching sports, dancing and laughing together, Something we genuinely treasure and embrace as often as possible.
I am an experienced leader and High-Performance Coach who thrives on collaborating, engineering and directing a strategic plan to guide and nurture people to improve performance and outcomes. Currently studying a Master of Educational leadership at the University of Auckland, I embrace our diverse community of learners by gathering perspectives and working collaboratively to build a team culture, leadership capacity and community engagement.
My background includes teaching and leading for over 25 years across three countries in the primary, intermediate and college education sectors. I am fully aware of the coherent pathways between each space and what it takes to transition students and teachers both academically and pastorally. I have joined MBS from Campbells Bay School, leading a team of 15 staff and approximately 340 students as the Associate Principal. In our Kahui Ako of 8 schools – I drive principles of wellbeing, student agency, and assessment for learning practices. I was also a key member of a design team, working collaboratively to create a 14 classroom ILE – guiding discussions to improve functionality and use of space to enhance student outcomes and wellbeing.
I was also a key leader in the establishment of Branksome Hall, Asia: a start-up international school within a global education city in South Korea. This experience provided the opportunity to create a world-class vision, values, and guiding principles. It helped enhance my strategic planning in terms of cultural perspective, evaluation stance, agency, systemic thinking, metacognition and valuing deep conceptual knowledge within the local and national community. These experiences I bring to Mairangi Bay School as we start our new journey together.

Embracing our community

Our school values of atawhai (Kindness), whakaute (Respect) and manawanui (Resilience) are a great way to embrace learning-focused relationships by leading from the heart. Your presence will provide an excellent opportunity for our kura to continue to grow together in the effort to nurture whanangatanga – establishing lifelong relationships, kinship and a sense of connection. We can do this by creating a platform for sharing experiences and providing our whānau with a sense of belonging. Something I look forward to leading through our values as your principal.

We can acknowledge our community’s strengths, values, and vision by listening to your perspective and aspirations for the future. I believe this is vital if we want to continue to grow the success of our school. Therefore, I have attached a short community survey to capture your voice so we can co-construct what it means to be a learner at Mairangi Bay School. Once the data has been collected, we will share the report in conjunction with the student and staff perspectives. This will build the foundation of our next steps as a school. The deadline for completing the community survey is Friday, 20 May – at 3 pm. Nāu te rourou, nāku te rourou, ka ora ai te iwi.

Welcome to Our New Families

We are excited to welcome you and your children into our school community. Please reach out if you have any questions, we are always here to support you in moving to Mairangi Bay School.
I am honoured to be working alongside the staff and tamariki at Mairangi Bay School. Together we will uncover new opportunities and craft our next chapter. I hope you enjoy the term. Remember to stay connected, check the school calendar for upcoming events, and be ready to make a difference once again alongside our kura and community.

If you have any concerns, please reach out to your child’s teacher or email me on [email protected]

He nui atu tatou i te kura – We are more than just a school.
