Welcome back to a new school term. Hopefully you were able to spend some quality time with your children over the break. While you were away we had Rooms 5 and 6 renovated. You may have been wondering why we had a large container out the front of the school that appeared at the end of last term. On the last Friday of Term 2, we emptied out the contents of Rooms 5 and 6 into the container so that the construction company could replace the old hessian board that dated from 1967 with a new, better performing product. Jan Westerkamp and Jody Kukard were able to get back into their classes over the weekend to return them to something like their pre-renovation condition. Their dedication and effort are much appreciated. The upcoming school holidays will see the process repeated for Rooms 7 and 8. We are hoping to have a new canopy installed in the next 6 weeks which will provide some indoor/outdoor flow for this classroom block.
Term 3’s Inquiry is called Function. You will be receiving information from teaching teams with more learning specifics this week. If we have any engineers or inventors in our parent community, we would love to hear from you. If you can spare some time to share your expertise with your child’s class, please contact their teacher directly. This unit is one of the most popular of the 8 concepts we cover over a two-year period.
Later this term, we will be holding student-led conferences. Stay in touch with your child’s learning before this by downloading the Hero App. Currently, we have almost 50% of parents with the app. This is a great way to get school communication. Currently, students have reading goals which you can see, with Maths goals coming in Week 2. Writing goals are coming later.
Kia hikaka, kia maia, kia pono te ngakau.

Mairangi Bay School Walking School Buses – Join a Walking School Bus!
Keen to make school drop-off/pick-up easier and stress-free? Meet other local parents and get some fresh air and exercise? Have your kids arrive at school energised and ready to start their days learning?
A walking school bus is a group of children who walk together to/from school with parent supervisors along a set route. Parents take turns and shouldn’t need to walk more than one day a week. The other 4 days are free, while your children get all the benefits and make new friends in their local area.
Mairangi Bay School has 3 routes running, come and give it a try!

Mairangi Bay School Star
On a recent visit to Stardome, Room 4 was presented with a star that has been adopted by Mairangi Bay School. Taj’s parents, Wendy and Theo kindly adopted the star on the school’s behalf in celebration of Matariki.
The children were excited to learn about where they could find the star in the solar system and some interesting facts about it. At Stardome, the educators made sure to zoom in and show us the Vela constellation, where the Mairangi Bay School star sits.
Thank you to Wendy, Theo and Taj for their kind contribution and for providing incredible support for our space topic this term.
