Principal’s Message

Time flies! It’s hard to believe that we are almost halfway through Term 2. It’s been a busy time since the last newsletter. We had a lovely farewell assembly last Friday for Clare Curtice who has been at our school for the past 10 years in a variety of roles.

The Kapa Haka group performed wonderfully – led by Whaea Anna and Miss Houston. The ukelele group played too. We had a successful cross country day – congratulations to everyone who took part. There was much sweating and a few tears but many more smiles. It was great to see students cheering on their friends and classmates. My message to the competitors at the end was that the day was not really about the run, it was about the effort and discipline they had put in to ensure they did their best.
We also had a successful Book Week. Mrs Hopkins, our amazing librarian, has added a wealth of information later in this week’s newsletter. Gate duty conversations at 3 pm led me to believe that the most enjoyable aspect of the week was the character parade but that may be because most of my chats were with younger students.
Coming up in the next two weeks, we have Science in a Van visiting the Year 1s and 2s on Wednesday and The Bee Lady coming next week. You will of course know that we have a Teacher Only Day on Friday, June 4 and we are closed on Monday, June 7 for the Queen’s Birthday.

Have a safe and relaxing long weekend.

Nga mihi

Well done to ALL of our students who participated in our cross country race. It was fun to watch how you improved during training, as well as seeing your smiling (and sometimes puffing) faces on the big race day. Pictured are all of our top three runners (boys and girls) in each year level.

Book Week Celebration

Mrs Hopkins would like to thank all the children, teachers and families of Mairangi Bay School for a wonderful week of celebrating Books and Reading.

It was a fun-filled week starting off with the ever so popular Book Character Dress-up Day and Parade.  The children showcased amazing creativity and originality in their costumes, making it a difficult job for the judges. Click Here to view the highlights of Book Week, including the Highly Commended and Winners of the Book Character Dress-up day.  During Book Week each class did a stellar job of decorating their doors/windows in their chosen book or theme Click here to view their amazing creations.

Jammies in June Collection

Every year, thousands of children go to sleep each night without warm pyjamas to combat the cold and preventable illnesses. Together we can change that. This year the Middlemore Foundations “Jammies in June” target is to distribute 25,000 pairs of pyjamas to keep children warm during the winter.
One of our teachers, Mrs Booth, is the contact point for “Jammies in June” on the North Shore and this year Mairangi Bay School will be supporting this wonderful cause with a “Pyjama Mufti Day”.
Our children are encouraged to wear their warm pyjamas to school on Friday 18 June and to bring along a set of pyjamas to donate to the Middlemore Foundation. Retailers who sell pyjamas include, but are not limited to, the likes of Farmers, The Warehouse, Postie Plus, Kmart etc. If you would prefer, you are more than welcome to make a donation in lieu of pyjamas. As it is getting colder the pyjamas are needed now, if you choose to you can purchase them and drop them into the school office at any time between now and the 18 June.
