Principal’s Message

Kia ora tatou

Thank you to all the parents who are helping with trips. Today it has been the Beach Education session at the Mairangi Bay Surf Club.   It is good to be at Alert level 1 and it is wonderful to have your help so we can be enriching our kids’ learning.

Advertisements drew a strong field of applicants for the permanent deputy principal position. After interviewing the shortlisted applicants, Claire Worthington Blair has been appointed. Claire has been in this role in an acting capacity since Jeanette Smail retired at the end of Term 2. We also congratulate Michelle Webster who has been appointed acting deputy principal for 2021 for when I am seconded to the leadership advisory team. Peter Stoner as acting principal next year will be well supported with two very capable senior leaders.

We are looking forward to Grandparents and Friends Day on Friday 4 December. Grandparents and other adults who are well known to our kids are welcome to visit the school from midday to share lunch in the playground, to be entertained and to join our kids in their classrooms. This afternoon is a real highlight for our kids.

Congratulations to our PTA team for organising the first DIY Eco Gift Night. Good to see the community support for this new event.

We have booked Hungerball for Tuesday. This is a game our kids love. It involves soccer skills in a large inflatable. Mostly it is here just because it is fun. Each class will have a turn.

School Notices

Junior Summer Showcase – 11th December 11 am – 12.30 pm, followed by a shared lunch in the classrooms. All parents invited. Details to follow.

Teacher Only Days 2021 – The Ministry of Education has provided a number of teacher only days to be scheduled next year. In order to minimalise disruption, our school will align with Murrays Bay Intermediate School. The Board of Trustees has therefore approved the following days:

  • Term 2: Friday June 4 (Queens Birthday weekend)
  • Term 3: Friday September 3
  • Term 4: Tuesday 26 October (Labour Day weekend)

School is closed for students on these days. Where possible the days are chosen to extend long weekends and provide a longer break for those who can take advantage of them.

ICAS Update – Students who entered the ICAS Exams completed all their tests in Week 4. Happily the second year of online testing ran much more smoothly than in 2019 due to improvements in the University of New South Wales ICAS testing system.

Congratulations to all those students in Year 5 and 6 who took up the challenge. Results become available approximately 4-6 days after the sitting window closed on November 13. The school will pass on certificates to students when they become available. Students who gain Distinction or High Distinction will be presented with their certificates in an assembly this term.  Peter Stoner. Deputy Principal

Please check your child’s uniform – Please take a moment to check the name on the back of your child’s uniform. We have reports of uniform going missing, which is not in our lost property area, so we can only assume children are taking home each others’ items by mistake. If the uniform your child has brought home doesn’t belong to them, please return it to school as soon as possible. We appreciate your assistance in this.

Before School

Please remember that children should not be at school before the 8.30 am bell unless they are attending Skids (Before and after school care). Children who arrive just before the 8.30am bell should be waiting at Gate 2 Galaxy Drive Drop/Off and Pick up area. This area is not supervised but does provide cover from the weather.

Room 3 writing. Room 3 built some resilience recently when they headed down to the Mairangi Bay shops on a wet morning to buy their lunch – as part of their Term 3 unit on Financial Capability (trip postponed due to Covid).  To read a sample of writing from student, Henry Huang, in room 3, please click here.

Music News

The Junior Choir will be performing Christmas songs in Mairangi Bay outside Green Gables on December 5th from 11-12pm. Please let me know if your child is able to attend.
Thank you. Jan Westerkamp.

Thank you to the Senior Choir and the Marimba Group who performed at our school Assembly recently.
We were grateful that the Marimba Group were able to perform at Milford School at the North Shore Marimba Festival.
Thank you children and all the parents, who are so supportive.
The Ukulele Club is performing at assembly with Primary Notes (the staff band) on Friday 27 November.

Sports News

Interschool Touch Tournament – On the 3rd of November our Year 5/6 children headed down to Ashley Reserve to compete in the Interschool Touch Tournament.  Our Year 6 girls team had a long day playing 6 games in total, coming away with 5 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss. There was some hard competition throughout the day, but the girls played exceptionally well. With only 1 training session before this day, we sat down as a team to talk about our game plan. We executed this game plan all day even when we had back-to-back games and our legs were getting tired. We ended up finishing 2nd to Murrays Bay who we drew with earlier in the day. As a coach I was so very proud of this team and the way they played throughout the day.

Team: Zaria Ruby, Isabella Hempseed, Maya Shamir, Jess Bettany, Ella Martin, Isobel Stoner, Flo Tucker and Charlotte Hollis.
Coach: Ryan McWilliams

If you have any feedback we would love to hear from you so we can improve the next time.
Calendar Art should be delivered to school on Monday 30th November
Community Day Friday 4th December – we will be asking for some help with baked goods for this day.  If you are happy to get the recipe books out and the aprons on to provide some fresh baked goods, we would be delighted.  We will need these on Friday morning and they can be dropped off at the Kitchen window by the Hall.  Please name your containers so they can be collected at the end of the day.  We will be putting a call out for help on the day too once the schedule has been confirmed.
