The smiling faces! It is wonderful to have our kids back at school.
You have received my COVID-19 Updates which have included our Reopening for Level 2 plan. The newsletter tab on our website has all communications for you to refer to should you want to. We are confident we are making the school a safe place. We cannot be complacent! Do ask if you have any questions.
The recent move to Level 3 and 2 (2.5) has meant that a number of school events have had to be reassessed. See the Notice section below.
The teaching team here is concerned about how the disruptions this year have meant so many school days lost and that this has impacted on our kids’ learning. Academically, despite our best efforts at home and school, children are not where they would be expected to be at this time of the year. Even classroom routines, which are usually secure in the first few weeks of the year, are needing to be retaught. My hope is that our kids have gained in other areas. I hope that they are now more resilient and more aware of the need for them to be active in their learning. Let’s continue to work together to support them through this challenging year.

Mid Year Reports and Interviews
We will send you the mid-year report on Monday 14 September and invite you to come to school for parent-teacher interviews on Wednesday 16 September and Thursday 17 September. We have delayed this process in the hope that we may be at Level 1 by then or at least in a position where everyone can be confident about-face to face interviews, (which we see as a much better option than attempting this in Zoom sessions)
The online bookings for parent/teacher interviews will open next Monday 7 September at 4 pm. Details of how to book will be emailed later this week
The Mid Year Report is succinct. It provides the basic information for you to fuel the conversations you will have with the classroom teacher. We suggest you email any questions you have so that the teacher can speak to them directly in the interview.
Again, we need to be realistic about academic progress this year. Our focus on return to school is well-being because we know that the ongoing uncertainty of these times breeds anxiety. We need kids to feel safe and happy so that they can then benefit from academic learning programmes.
We have 83% attendance today. We have a number of parents who are choosing to wait a while longer until they have their children return to school. We respect this decision. We will continue to do all we can to make school as safe as possible as per our Level 2 plan.
We will send home shortly the review of distance learning (the first time) that many of you contributed to.
We will provide a version of distance learning to support children who are still at home. This is available online from today or tomorrow. Providing both distance learning and at school teaching is not sustainable but we do see the need to support all of our children at school and at home. This extension for distance learning will be reassessed on a week by week basis.
ICAS has offered schools a second period of time to sit this year’s tests. Consequently, anyone who has paid to sit an ICAS test will be able to sit the exams in November. We have allocated an entire week that we think will work well to enable students to have exam conditions. So all ICAS tests will be conducted in the week beginning 2 November.
Several events cannot be held until Alert Level 1. Cross Country and our International day are on hold.
Year 6 End of Year School Events
Our principal sent a video message to the parents of Year 6 students last week. He explained our thinking. We now have dates for your calendar. The awards ceremony is Wednesday 9 December 1.30pm . The leaving ceremony is the not to be missed event scheduled for Friday 11 December 6pm. It will include a fun time for our Year 6 kids and an opportunity for the parents to share in this event.

The government’s parent website has information about COVID-19 alert levels for parents and whānau. It will be regularly updated as new information becomes available. It is recommended to check out this website on a regular basis.
Today your child will bring home their individual Photo Access Key, this gives a unique code for you to view and order your child’s photos online. If your child is not at school today the teacher will keep the shoot key and issue when they return. Please note the free delivery period expires at Midnight on Sunday 27th September.
Looking forward to seeing the Marimba group and Ukulele Club again ‘live’ this week.
