Principal’s Message
Kia ora tatou
I have reluctantly accepted Jeanette Smail’s resignation. Jeanette has taught in a number of schools and she has been with us for the last 16 years. She has made a significant contribution to our school leadership always going the extra mile for her students and colleagues. She leaves us at the end of term to enjoy a well-deserved retirement. She will be missed. You are invited to her farewell assembly. See School Notices.
We welcome Amanda Drabble who returns to Aotearoa from teaching overseas. Amanda comes highly recommended and we are delighted to have her join our team. She will be teaching Year 1 Room 12.
It was fabulous to see the EPro8 hands-on problem-solving sessions for our Year 5-6 students last week. Budding engineers came to the fore and it was inspiring to see the levels of collaboration right across the year levels.
Our team is reviewing what has been learned during the Covid-19 pandemic to inform our practice. More information to follow.
Ngā mihi
Bruce Warren, Principal
Kia hikaka, kia maia, kia pono te ngakau.
School Notices
Welcome to our new students and their families
Joy Zhang, Eric Liu, Jessica Lin, Analise Yii and Jorja Salsone.
Alert level 2 to Level 1
Thank you everyone for respecting our Alert Level 2 protocols. Our plan is working well. Thank you for keeping your children home when they are unwell. For children’s health, the best information source is the Ministry of Health website. Early detection of any illness is important. You can call Healthline 0800 611 116 any time you suspect symptoms of any condition but are not sure what to do.
As soon as we know we can move to Level 1, we will email you and we can then get closer to what used to be the ‘old normal’. In the meantime please continue to stay out of classrooms unless it is really necessary and don’t linger after school. The playground is still closed after school. All 9-3 visitors must report to the office.
Farewell Assembly for Mrs Smail
You are invited to a special assembly for our DP Jeanette Smail. This will be our opportunity for children and parents to say thank you to this dedicated educator. The assembly will be on Wednesday 1 July at 2 pm.
Student Learning Conferences and Midyear Reports
The Covid-19 disruption has necessitated the postponement of mid-year reporting until early next term. ie a report and an interview. We will however have Student Learning Conferences this term. Please mark Thursday 25 June in your calendar. Online bookings open next Monday. We will send you the code and more information then.
Pickup at 3 pm
Thank you to our parents who keep driveways clear when queuing in Galaxy Drive. Occasionally, we have neighbours complaining that their access is blocked. We ask you to always choose safety over convenience.
It would be helpful if you reinforced the message at home that we are giving at school. “If you are being picked up at 3 pm, move quickly from your classroom to the waiting area so parents are not kept waiting.”
Mufti Day Friday..SPCA
An ex-student Caitlin Edwards is organising a Mufti Day for our school for this coming Friday. Gold coin donations support the SPCA.
Thank you Breakers
We would like to say thank you to Matt Walsh, the Breakers owner, for his generosity. Matt has donated 50 balls to Mairangi Bay School. Thanks, Matt! They are a great hit with the kids.
