This morning I sent an email to all of our parents about the Christchurch massacre. It contained advice from the Ministry of Health for parents when talking to your children. I also explained how teachers are responding to any questions asked by children in classrooms. People in our community want to show their concern and support of those who have been impacted by this event. Friday will be a “you are us” mufti day. You are invited to send a gold coin donation.
The teachers’ union, the NZEI, has rightly postponed this week’s union meetings because it believes that the well-being of our children needs to take priority. The possibility of strike action on 3 April is perhaps less likely. I will update you as soon as I hear anything more. If a strike is called, sKids our before and after school care service, will offer a childcare programme on site for the school day.
Thank you to all of you who have offered to help at our Year 5-6 camp next week and for the upcoming Year 1-2 Explore the Bay walk to Mairangi Bay village.
We are pleased that we can now offer an onsite holiday programme at our school. The information for these programmes run by sKids is included in this newsletter.
Bruce Warren, Principal
Kia hikaka, kia māia, kia pono te ngakau.
Welcome to our new students
Zhisheng He, Ava Buckley and Matthew Wang.
Volunteers wanted for our kitchen and garden programme.
Our school is introducing the Garden to Table programme for our Yr 5/6 children in Term 2. It’s a unique and inspiring programme teaching our children how to grow and harvest produce grown in the school garden, to then be prepared and shared in the school kitchen. The lessons will take place on a Thursday between 9.00am and 12.30pm.
For this to be successful, we need you! This project relies on the support of volunteers to work with children in the garden and kitchen, sharing their
experience, enthusiasm and knowledge.
You don’t have to be an expert! Our Garden and Kitchen Specialists are always on hand to provide expert advice and oversee the sessions. You just need to be interested in helping children learn about growing food, cooking and sharing food, and enjoy working with children.
Have we talked you into it? We’d love to hear from you! Please contact Siobhan Cooper, Volunteer Co-ordinator at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
