Mairangi Bay School is an Enviroschool. Children are encouraged to think and act in ways that are environmentally sustainable. This is achieved by:
1. Integrating environmental, conservation and social issues into our school curriculum.
2. Lessening our impact on the environment through our waste management practices (reduce, reuse, recycle) and conservation of water and energy.
3. Communicating effectively with our students, their parents and the school community and inviting them to join us in our environmental programmes.
We have an active Enviro-group at the school. They have a noticeboard of their activities in the Library. Please check out the Envirokids section to find out what has been happening at our school this year.

Enviroschools Awards 2009
On 4 December 2009 Mairangi Bay School was presented with their Enviroschools Bronze Award at Tirimoana School in Te Atatu. Mrs Johnston and Mrs Cooper attended the ceremony with three Year 4 students who have been active in the Enviro-Group. We were welcomed on to the school with a Powhiri and then the Awards were presented. Natalia gave a small speech which she wrote herself about our school. Later on we were taken on a tour of the school before having a shared lunch with other Enviroschools that had achieved Awards. It was a very special day. Even if it did pour with rain!
Natalia’s words:
“At our school we have no outside rubbish bins. We have waste-free lunches and a ‘pack it in, pack it out’ policy for rubbish. We have compost bins and worm bins. We have gardens growing strawberries, carrots, sunflowers and Maori potatoes. We have beautiful hanging flower baskets. We have a rain barrel to collect rainwater instead of using tap water. We made an Eco-hut out of recycled materials. At our school we support Nature to grow.”
1. North Shore Schools with their Bronze Awards; Mairangi Bay School, Willow Park School, Westlake Girls and Birkenhead Primary.
